So on the day of my surreal Arrested Development experience (see the above post), I was able to help out a friend in a jam. My long time homie/partner in crime JD called me up while I was staying in Harlem to let me know that our friend Niyre needed a drummer at the last minute for a recording gig in Brooklyn. Without any other details, I hustled downtown to the address he gave me and found myself at a studio that was much nicer than I had expected. In fact, it was one of the nicest studios I have recorded in.
So it turned out that the studio is owned by Converse shoes, and while I’m not the hugest fan of music’s commercialization, they have this dope thing where they give qualifying independent artists free studio time, as well as consider using their music for promotional purposes. Plus, at the end of the session, you get some free Chucks. And hey, free swag is always a nice plus.
SIDENOTE: Much like at my own home studio, artists can sign their wall. Eager to be the first drummer to sign in, I realized that I had been bested by none other than ?uestlove. Oh well.
