Liner notes for the third track from Soul Beauty, Vol. 2: The Love EP:
The idea for this song, production-wise, came from a beat I had worked on from way back in May of 2009. A reworked version of that idea showed up on my OctoberFresh Beat Tape project from 2010, and after I had written the hook, I really wanted to rework it using live instrumentation for the Soul Beauty, Vol. 2 project. I had been listening to quite a bit of Foreign Exchange’s Leave It All Behind at the time, which I think had its own influence. For quite a while, I only had the two sung verses written, and although I really liked how they fit the chorus conceptually, the song felt too short and too empty, and I didn’t hear a bridge fitting anywhere. I think that I had somehow subconsciously decided not to rhyme on the album, and somewhere, at some point, I prodded myself into thinking: “Why not? You’re not a singer either, but you’re doing that already.” So I wrote the 16 that became the final verse of the song.
