Some liner notes from my Soul Beauty, Vol. 2 project:
In the spring of 2009, I was one year out of college, but my then-girlfriend was finishing her senior year. I still lived near campus, and I remember stopping by her work-study desk job while out running errands. I commandeered her from her post, wheeled her into the building’s multipurpose room, and hammered away at their rickety upright piano, playing her the song that I had just written that week. “The Answers” is one of the few songs that I wrote nearly all in one sitting; perhaps due to the simplicity of its lyrics and form. (I had been listening to a lot of Raphael Saadiq, and wanted to try my hand at some ‘gospeldelic’ music of my own.) The bassline came to me in an instant; it was perfect for my homie John E Daise, who plays on the recording. For the album, I also tried my hand at my first experience recording live organ, on a Hammond L-133 owned by my father’s church.
Give it a spin, why don’t you?
