This week, I had a chance to re-watch one of my favorite films, Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. While there are many things that I enjoy about the film, its score in particular (and the music in Spike’s films in general) is well-selected and quite enjoyable.
Each time I watch, I am reminded of a particular scene that takes place in the Korean convenience store, wherein Ossie Davis’ character, Da Mayor, is searching for his summertime drink of choice, Miller High Life, to no avail. Besides it being quite an entertaining scene (Davis shouts for them to “get some High Life in this funky joint!”), the background music on the store’s loudspeakers always stood out to me as really dope, even EQ-ed to sound all trebly and radio-warbled. So I finally did a scouring of the internet and found it.
The song, “Prove To Me” is by a group called Perri, a girl group of sisters who I had never heard of until now, but am definitely glad I stumbled upon. Spike does always seem to have excellent taste for the scoring of his films. Enjoy.
