The Soul Beauty, Vol. 2 liner notes continue…
I wrote “Destiny” during the fall of 2007, while I was studying abroad at the University of Ghana during my senior year. The relationship I was in at the time had subsequently become a transatlantic long-distance situation, and so our primary means of communication had become sporadic internet contact, wherein I would occasionally send snippets of songs I was working on. I remember sitting on my bed in my dormitory, writing the third verse in the midst of a rolling blackout and having to use my wind-up generator flashlight to get enough light to write by. I recorded it in the spring of 2008 for my first album, Soul Beauty, Vol. 1; originally sung by a college friend of mine, Malcolm. After three years, it still managed to be one of my favorite songs from that project, and so I thought it’d be fun to do it one mo’ gin.
